The stream flows next to you, behind you the waterfall plunges into the depths. You are wearing a warm neoprene suit and a climbing harness. The guide has already hooked you into the rope – now you can go to the edge of the cliff and look down. It’s a 40-metre drop! And it’s your turn. To take that one step, that step over the edge. Do you dare?

You did it! That one step! Then – you’ve practised abseiling before, it’s not that difficult. Slowly you are gliding down along the rope next to the waterfall, the spray in your face. You land at the bottom, in the pool of the waterfall. Swim away from the roaring water, take a deep breath, lie down on your back, let yourself drift and look up. Your eyes are following the waterfall, up to the edge of the cliff where your buddy is now standing. He’s too far away, too high up to see it clearly – but his knees aren’t shaking, are they?

But he also manages to step over the edge and soon you are all reunited and we continue. Next, a jump awaits you: What will it be, 5 metres or 8 metres? At this point everyone can decide for themselves. Two of you like jumping less and decide to abseil down again instead. Now, after the 40 metres earlier, it goes like clockwork, the step over the edge is already less nerve-racking, more enjoyable. Yes, that’s canyoning Ticino!

Canyoning is instead navigating down rocky gorges along a stream. It is not to be confused with canoeing – we are not travelling in a boat.

Some tours take place in less steep rivers where there is mainly swimming, like the Viamala tour in Graubünden. But in Ticino, most of the gorges are rather steep, and here every gorge has waterfalls, smoothly polished rocks and sparkling pools – nature’s perfect playground. Wrapped in neoprene suits, equipped with canyoning shoes, helmet and climbing harnesses specially adapted for canyoning, you slide, jump, swim and abseil along the river through the gorge.

And no, it’s not difficult. But you should have a bit of an adventurous spirit, be sure-footed and free from vertigo, and enjoy being in the water. You don’t have to be able to swim in style, as the swimming technique is completely different from that in the swimming pool, and the wetsuit gives you a lot of buoyancy. But you should have the confidence to jump at least 2-3 metres into the water.

We distinguish between four levels of difficulty, depending on the length of the tour, the height of the jumps and abseils, the difficulty of the passages and the access to the pools. The very easy tours are mainly for families with younger children and youth/school groups. The standard tours are just that – easily doable for anyone with normal fitness and a bit of a sense of adventure. The sporty tours are just that – they are higher and steeper and require much more courage and good body control. Experience in canyoning or abseiling is not absolutely necessary but also not wrong. The challenging tours, on the other hand, are really only for sporty guests who enjoy high jumps and challenging abseils. Previous experience is certainly helpful here.
